Visitors:
A big thanks to everyone that helped with today's count (too many to list
out here) but it wouldn't be possible without all those eyes scanning the
sky! :) Lots of visitors today for the start of the 2nd open house
weekend.
Weather:
A weird day weather wise with a nice mix of sun and cloud to start but way
too humid and winds light from the SW. Then the clouds filled in and we had
a couple of bouts of light rain and then winds switched to the NW and temps
dropped noticeably.
Raptor Observations:
We struggled to get to triple digits today with a total of just 108 raptors
observed. Best birds today were the 3 Peregrines two of which were right on
the deck and a decent movement of N. Harriers (18) with almost all being
young birds and a couple that looked like adult females.
Non-raptor Observations:
Some other bird species were noted today including 7 species of woodpecker!
Pileated, Red-bellied, Red-headed (juv.), Harry, Downy, N. Flicker (15+)
and a single YB Sapsucker (juv.). We also had a few warblers... Cape May,
Magnolia, Black and White and American Redstart along with Am. Crow and Am.
Robin. A couple of Chimney Swifts zipped past and other birds spotted
flying through included Herring and Ring-billed Gulls, DC Cormorant, Canada
Geese, Killdeer, Common Loons (2), Mourning Dove and Rock Pigeon. Other
species.... WB Nuthatch, Gray Catbird, Belted Kingfisher, Carolina and
Winter Wrens, RC Kinglet, Red-eyed Vireo, E. Starling Cedar Waxwings and
Northern Cardinal. Also spotted was a very large dark bird just passing to
our north right at treetop height that we're almost sure was a Common Raven
but we weren't able to get it in the scope for more than a split second.
Might be worth keeping an eye out in areas to the west of Hawk Cliff for
this bird.
