OK, here's our variant: Anchored out in Steamboat Slough in the California Delta, sleeping in the aft cabin. I am awoken at dawn by what sounds like footsteps clunking around in the cockpit. Hmmm, WTH? Wife is sleeping soundly next to me and our freinds in the front of the boat are late sleepers. Heart starts to pump a little. I open the rear door slowly, stick out my head, and there flopping around is a nice 15 pound (estimated) silver. The first thought was "here's dinner!", so was the second thought. But then, in a little voice said "she needs to get on up the river and make babies, you can catch one fair and square". Awwwwwww. So I grabbed a camera, got my proof on film, and sent her on her way. I am convinced that all subsequent good fishing luck has eminated from then. By the way there is a good three feet of freeboard on that boat. I have never seen a salmon jump that high. Must have been through the ajar transom door.
