Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsSpeaking of mail drops, back in 2007 I spent the entire summer on my boat
on the canals, and still handled bookkeeping and bill paying for my
business while on the boat. I did that by having my crew at work send me
an air letter or package once a week, and they were always addressed to a
nearby Canal Lock or some town's visitors center. Most canal installations
will allow you to do that and it is extremely convenient when you're
moving. But always check with them first.
Also, when on the Champlain Canal, I can offer myself as a mail/UPS drop,
and my business ships via UPS daily. Feel free to use my location for
that.

Another caution or two while we're being paranoid. I have, as do
many others, a small GPS navigator with "favorite places" including
"home" stored in it. I make "home" a few doors down the street in
case someone obtains the GPS, checks "home" and rushes there to take
whatever I left.
Also, my "home" number in my cell phone isn't filed under "Home," but
under a secret name (and it's not #1 on speed-dial). So it can't be
"lifted" and checked to see if anyone is "home."
Yes, we can learn to worry about all kinds of stuff. But I agree
that having a mail drop is a good idea -- whether on a boat or not.

And that's why so many of us have a 411 Walnut Street address. We call or
let them know via email where to ship our mail and packages and how fast to
do it. We always ask the marina operator if we can get a UPS shipment and
have always been accommodated. If you however make the mistake of asking if
you can have your "mail" shipped to their location, several have declined.
UPS okay ... mail not okay. Even though we are running our business fulltime
when we cruise, it's wonderful not to get mail every day!
