In case you haven't read the new book by Greenburg(?), it is well worth it
and of course it is certainly appropriate considering the subject of this
forum. She also wrote "The Endurance" about Shackelton.
Mike -
Some years ago when I lived in Anacortes, Washington I became good
friends with Ernest K. Gann, an author who penned a score of books
such as Fate is the Hunter, The High and the Mighty, The Aviator,
etc. Ernie was a fascinating multi-faceted guy with wide ranging
interests and experiences.
For the years that I knew him he was fascinated with the story of the
Bounty and he did a tremendous amount of research on the subject,
traveling to Pitcairn Island a few times and spending a great deal of
time in the U.K doing research. Once, after we had been out flying he
showed me an exact copy of the Bounty's log book. Over lunch I asked
him what he thought precipitated the mutiny. I expected him to
pontificate at length and I was surprised at the brevity of his
comments.
According to Ernie, Bligh and Christian had a long-standing
homosexual affair and the mutiny was caused by a lover's tiff. At
first I thought he was joking, but he was absolutely serious. He had
some fairly compelling evidence but frankly it's been so many years
ago that I don't remember the specifics.
