Researching catastrophic medical insurance for our cruise, I came across IMG
(International Medical Group). I can buy a policy for my wife and I for
about $1,900/year ($5,000 deductible). It has the following conditions:
a. Pre-existing conditions not covered until 24 months has elapsed, then
only if disclosed
b. Must depart the US within 30 days of policy issue
c. Must stay outside the US for 6 months, then it can be in effect when you
return
d. Evacuation provided for patient and one other person.
d. $5,000,000 lifetime benefit
Overall this is just what I'm looking for. Do any list members have
experience with IMG? Alternatives with real world claims experience?
Thanks,
Scott Bulger, Alanui, N40II, Seattle WA
I used them when I was working outside the US. No complaints, paid claims,
but a little slow. They cancelled me as soon as I turned 65.

If you Google: medical evacuation insurance -college -university -faculty
You will see you have a very big selction. For travel to China, we used
short-term medevac insurance from an outfit in Baltimore. Most importantly,
we purchased a kit for developing nations with sterile syringes, needles,
and suture kits - for the use of medical professionals in countries where
the reuse these things after cursory cleaning. It also contained essential
packets of electrolytes to mix with water for cases of dehydration.
In addition, Bob Austin has posted his version of a model kit. If you have a
domestic medical plan, you may wish to focus on medevac. Of course, they
might evac you to Singapore in which case you'd have to have some type of
overseas coverage.
