One day, as Derek Nunn walked down the back alley of Shibuya district in Tokyo, filled with standing only drinking joints and ramen stalls, he saw a street theater show in an outside izakaya where two actors played out a whole scene at one table on two stools, as regular patrons crowded around the establishment, chowing down small plates of food and a great deal of beer. It left a huge impression on him. “Why couldn’t we do that in Tacoma?” thought Derek. And that was the beginning. When Derek shared this thought with a fellow filmmaker, Masahiro Sugano, it reignited his interest in doing a small underground theater production in Tacoma. He's taught many examples of Tokyo’s “Angura Theater” movements from the 60s in his class today. Masa is well aware of how underground theater is often neglected in the live art scenes in the U.S., when so much bold experimentation could take place and talents can be nurtured. Derek and Masa decided to launch a series of One Table Shows in Tacoma, where actors (seasoned or barely starting) work with a director and a writer to do a small show at a non-conventional theater venue (café, restaurant, street corner, etc.) on a monthly basis. Please spread the word to actors and performers in town for an audition that is scheduled to take place on Friday & Saturday, December 15 & 16, at the lounge space of The Grand Cinema (606 W. Fawcett, Tacoma). No particular role or story is designated to the project yet. The script will be developed fully after the director, casting and location are locked in. So please come in and share your performance talent in a casual manner. This is just the beginning of what we hope will be a catalyst for the arts community to grow and cultivate. Through this initial audition, we will build a roster of actors, writers and directors that will take this project into the future, with productions happening on a monthly basis. We hope to do our first show in late January of 2024 as a test piece. All actors will be paid for the public performance.
