Yesterday Jenny Bull, Bob Tyler and I birded Ward’s, Algonquin and Snake Islands, and on to the Trout Pond on Gibraltar Point on the Toronto Islands and following are some of the birds we found.
14 Trumpeter Swans, 38 Mute Swans, undercounted, including some we could see on the harbour beside Hanan’s Point, many Canada Geese, Black Ducks, 100+ Mallards, Gadwall, Canvasbacks, Redheads, Ring-necked Duck, 1200 to 1500 Greater Scaup on the harbour, Lesser Scaup, 500+ Long-tailed Ducks, 4 Black Scoters, 115 White-winged Scoters, 1 Surf Scoter, 250+ Common Goldeneye, only about 40 Bufflehead, way down from previous years, 25+ Common Mergansers, 100+ Red-breasted Mergansers, Sharp-shined and Cooper’ Hawks, Peregrine Falcon, 1800 to 2000 Ring-billed Gulls (they are back), Great Black-backed Gull carrying some kind of prey in it’s beak, 11 Downy Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpecker, many Chickadees as usual, White-breasted Nuthatches, Carolina and Winter Wren, 2 Hermit Thrushes, 29 Robins, 27 Cardinals, undercounted, Tree and White-throated Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos.
Most waterfowl were on the harbour side with many of them very close to the islands giving great views. A scope may be useful in finding some waterfowl species that we missed.
PS – Between Feb. 23rd and 25th Bob and Jenny also saw Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Mockingbird, Common Redpolls, Golden-crowned Kinglets, a Male Northern Pintail and adult Bald Eagle. The Mockingbird and Red-bellied Woodpecker have been there all Winter, mostly on Algonquin Island.
