The threads on pencil zincs, at least the ones that I purchase, are
standard threads. I've purchased matching tap and die and use them to clean
up poor threads, or when I drill out the plugs for reuse.

I soak the plugs in Muriatic acid to get the remnants of the old zinc out.

Richard,
Approximately how long do they soak?
Thanks

Dear List,
I replaced both of mine on my Iveco engine with bronze plugs. With just a
little TLC, the old one screws off and the new one screws on. I soak my
plugs in a small citric acid bath to chemically clean the threads of any
residue. Knock on wood I have had none of the problems discussed in this
thread.
Iveco uses these plugs on engines that as emergency backup in the field,
like for cell towers. I have no clue why they are not standard on a engine
in a marine application.
