It is amazing how the world deserts you when the fog closes in. Like
someone said, even familiar waters become strangely unfamiliar feeling.

What really scares me is plodding along at 7 knots in pea soup fog and
seeing a radar target zipping right along, coming right at you. Invariably
it is a fisherman in a 18 footer with his head stuck out the open center
windshield, like he can see better that way. But one time we had a quite
large target, moving rapidly on an intercept course. I changed course to
ensure we were out of its path.Through the fog came a 50-60' Navy patrol
boat of some sort moving along at what I'd estimate to be 15+ knots in 1/4
mile visibility. Yes, they have good radars. Yes, they have somebody
dedicated to watching the radar and nothing else. Yes, they are practiced
and skilled at it. But still, one screwed up by somebody on board sure
could ruin your day.
