Today was a very good day for early in the season at Lighthouse Point,
despite the thousands of dragonflies that tried to get counted.
There was good cloud cover for most of the day, which made it much
easier for Don Morgan and I to see the birds. There was a total of
137 Hawks, which was composed of the following:
Osprey... 52. Bald Eagle... 3 - all juvenile. Northern Harrier... 4.
Sharp-shinned Hawk... 40. Cooper's Hawk... 10. Red-Shouldered
Hawk... 1. Broad-winged Hawk... 13. American Kestral... 7.
Merlin... 1. Peregrine Falcon... 6.
Besides all of the hawks, there was also some land birds moving through;
Bob-o-links... 187 Red-Winged Blackbirds... 200 Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds... 6 Chimney Swifts... 22 Barn Swallow... 25
Common Loon... 1 still in nice breeding plumage. 1 Lesser Yellowlegs
flew over the site, giving it's distinctive 2-note call, making it easy
to identify.
Tree Swallows... The Tree swallows were on the move all morning. A
conservative estimate of the movement today was just about 2,500 . At
any time all morning, you could look toward the condominiums or out
into the marsh area and see Swallows going through.
