Short Term Cell and Data Plans

I know many on the list have discussed cell and data plans
in Canada and the Bahamas, however I am looking for advice on the best value
for the money cell/data plans available in NY State.  I am planning on cursing the NY State canal
system in May and June.  At that time I
need to have a data service for internet, email and the likes.  I will not need the speed or down/up loads of
a gamer but certainly enough to send receive video.  Please add your knowledge to the discussion
so those of us from outside the US can gain from your knowledge.

And by-the-way if you see HeartBeat along her travels of the
canal system please stop and say hi, who knows you might even end up as part of
a discussion in my current book.

As a Canadian vessel doing the loop in 2011/12 I solved my data challenges by going to Walmart in the US and purchasing a MIFI unit from Virgin Mobile (about $100 back then) which gave me wifi on board that my laptop and cell phone could use. Virgin Mobile required a US address to purchase a data plan with a credit card, so I was able to get around that by purchasing "pay as you go cards" for Virgin Mobile from Walmart as well. For $50 a month I had unlimited data access. I found Virgin's cellular coverage to be pretty good especially along the eastern seaboard.

If you are a Rogers subscriber for your cellphone in Canada, they also have a US phone/data/text plan that you can purchase on a monthly basis. It might cost more than the Virgin Mobile solution, but then you don't have to purchase the Virgin Mifi unit. If you don't have a US plan, data roaming charges will be brutal on your Canadian device.

Hope this helps !

No apologies needed.  We New Yorkers sometimes curse the canal system on a
regular basis. :-)  But in all fairness, it is a wonderful and historic
feature for both New York and America.  It's influence from it's earliest
times on westward migration and industry is incredible.
