Shorebirds at Rock Point, July 24th

Today there was a good variety of shorebirds (13 species) at Rock Point

Provincial Park today. The following shorebirds were present early this
morning (estimated totals).

Ruddy Turnstone-2
Short-billed Dowitcher- 15
Greater Yellowlegs-20
Lesser Yellowlegs- 50
Black-bellied Plover-1
Killdeer- 15
Semipalmated Plover-1
Sanderling-45
Pectoral Sandpiper- 35
Semipalmated Sandpiper- 140
Least Sandpiper- 40
Solitary Sandpiper- 5
Spotted Sandpiper- 10

Also on the beach there was a dead Long-tailed Duck, which appeared to

have died recently.

Directions: Follow the Grand River south into Dunville, then go along

Regional Rd. 3 into the small town of Stromness and you can follow the Park
signs from there. Once into the park the rocky point is in the south east
corner of the park and there is an observation platform here that allows
good looks.
