Hours:  Up to 25 hours a week
Starting Range:  $17.00+ per hour, depending on qualifications
Location:  Center for Community Impact, Lakewood, WA
The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking an experienced Arts Coordinator to provide leadership, instruction and motivation for arts program participants and staff. Provide a quality experience to students and parents focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.  Represent the YMCA and self in a professional manner of safety and fun.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety and our YMCA values.
  • Treat every student fairly and equally regardless of circumstances and abilities, making each feel good about themselves and encouraging a fun environment.
  • Accentuate positive attributes nurturing the whole; physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally.  Give praise for effort.
  • Be available to help parents find answers to their questions
  • Maintain good public relations with members and always represent the best interests of the YMCA.
  • Arrive with ample time to report to position at the scheduled time.
  • Be responsible and fulfill your commitments to scheduled shifts. Notify a supervisor personally and in a timely manner if you are unable to meet your commitment. This includes illness and extenuating circumstances.
  • Participate in trainings as required.
  • Assume other responsibilities as mutually agreed upon with a supervisor.
  • Follow/Implement our Association Quality Standards and 9 Dimensions of Well Being into Youth Programming and Staff Development.
  • Assist in leading annual dance recitals, performing arts performances, Y Arts Week events and other YMCA events as assigned.
    Arts Coordinator Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Arts Director and to the Arts Department.
  • Update and prepare arts program schedules, marketing communication, and additional arts documents.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of summer arts programming.
  • Recruit, train and mentor volunteers and part-time staff in specified program areas.
  • Assist in supervision of performing and visual arts staff.
  • Manage class registration and program fees.
  • Assist in the production of department events, exhibitions, and recitals.
  • Maintain communication with members, dance company parents, and arts staff.
  • Instruct classes as scheduled, and provide substitute instruction as needed.
  • Lead dance and/or arts activities within the branch as assigned.
  • Effectively communicate program information and student progress as needed.
  • Attend branch and association arts staff trainings and meetings as required.
  • Effectively engage and lead volunteers, including Dance Teachers in Training, to provide quality programming for participants and positive volunteer experiences.

Safety

  • Dress according to YMCA dress code, having on the appropriate shirt and nametag.
  • Double-check and set-up all equipment prior to class.
  • Know the location of the first aid kit, nearest phone, and incident reports. It is highly encouraged to maintain current certification in CPR and First Aid.
    Additional duties
  • Model our YMCA values through fun, positive relationships with staff and members. Seek every opportunity to encourage, motivate and thank fellow volunteer/staff members for their work.
  • Be enthusiastic toward members, volunteers, and staff by learning their names and expressing an interest in their YMCA activities. Strive to enrich their YMCA experience by introducing them to new programs, staff, members and volunteer activities.
  • Incorporate "Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility" into all aspects of the position, to ensure YMCA values are being integrated into our culture and programs.
  • Maintain a consistent professional image through dress, actions and relationships with others. Speak enthusiastically on behalf of the YMCA at given opportunities.
  • Participate in applicable training and conferences to further professional growth as outlined in annual training plans.
  • Understand the financial assistance given to members comes from our Annual Campaign.  Assist staff in helping to identify those individuals that may be interested in serving as a campaigner for and a donor to these efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess the knowledge and skills to teach beginning, intermediate and advanced level performing or visual arts classes. Multiple disciplines preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree in related arts field or comparable experience.
  • 10+ years of formal performing or visual arts training or comparable experience.
  • 5+ years of experience as a performing or visual arts teacher and/or teaching assistant.
  • Professional theatrical experience required.
  • Prior experience in leading and developing others.
  • Appreciation and passion for visual, culinary and performing arts.
  • An understanding of and commitment to the Y philosophy and culture.
  • YMCA required trainings including Child Abuse Prevention training (within 30 days).
  • Outstanding ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • The ability to demonstrate a friendly, courteous and professional manner while working with volunteers, staff, parents, and participants, and the ability to understand, articulate and enforce YMCA policies and procedures in a positive way.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of families including adults and children.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Physical Demands:
    * Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities.
