building a boat website

Tommy,

I learned web design by looking at the code of other folk's pages and then
eventually editing them to suit what I wanted.  You can see that code by
popping up the page on your browser and hitting CTRL-U.  You can edit it
with Notepad.  When you have a edited page saved on your computer, you can
click it and your version will come up in your browser.  Then you upload
the page to wherever you will have it hosted.

Perhaps an easier way to do it, your internet provider may well have a
pre-fab page and an online editor made "for dummies".  Most of them do have
something like that.

A third way, would be to look at this page:

http://www.tug44.org/tugboats.trawlers/diesel-duck-trawler/

... and tell me what else ya want to see and I'll add it for ya, and you
can spend your time doing something else.

By the way, anyone else having a distinctive looking boat and a lot of
photos, contact me and I'll add your boat on a page of its own.

Agreed. You can use Blogger (http://www.blogspot.com) as your website for
anything.  Mine is at http://pnpsplace.blogspot.com.  I blog whatever suits
my fancy.  But when I do the Great Loop, I will be starting another blog on
Blogger just for that purpose, probably daydream.blogspot.com or something
like that.  It is very easy and requires little to no coding (a little
knowledge of HTML does make it more useful though).  Along with that you
might want an offline blog editor - I use a Mac and have used ecto for a
couple of years, it is inexpensive (under $20), gives you a lot of control,
and lets you write whenever and wherever, and then upload when you get an
internet connection.

If you use one of these free sites, your access URL is owned by them,
and if that is the only address you give to your friends and foes, and
if your webhost goes broke, sells out, puts offensive ads on your pages
or decides to charge to  much you are in a jam.  Move and lose your
followers or put up with the changes.

If, on the other hand you register a domain, say looppylooper.com
($10/yr) and arrange a pointer (alias) from loopylooper.com to that URL
to the blog URL you own your URL , you can move your content (you kept a
backup copy didn't you?) to any new place, change the pointer, and your
followers won't even know you've moved.

FWIW, loopylooper.com appears to be free for the taking as of the time
of writing, if you happen to be loopy, and also looping.

If you use one of these free sites, your access URL is owned by them, and if
that is the only address you give to your friends and foes, and if your
webhost goes broke, sells out, puts offensive ads on your pages or decides
to charge to  much you are in a jam.  Move and lose your followers or put up
with the changes.

If, on the other hand you register a domain, say looppylooper.com
($10/yr) and arrange a pointer (alias) from loopylooper.com to that URL to
the blog URL you own your URL , you can move your content (you kept a backup
copy didn't you?) to any new place, change the pointer, and your followers
won't even know you've moved.

FWIW, loopylooper.com appears to be free for the taking as of the time of
writing, if you happen to be loopy, and also looping.

I've been in the computer racket since 1979 and seen a lot of things
that no one expected.

You have been warned, and a word to the wise is sufficient.

If you value your investment in time and effort in creating a website,
get your own domain name and point it to whatever free site you happen
to be using at the moment.
