Public surveys and focus groups ensured the community's input was included in the mural design. When: Saturday, August 6, from 1-5 p.m. Where: Tollefson Plaza, 1548 Commerce Street, downtown Tacoma Who: Dionne Bonner, lead artist on the project, will be available for interviews, along with local artists and project team members. Why: The purpose of the mural is to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history. The handprints will decorate a quilt within the mural design, communicating that we're all part of the fabric working toward racial equality together. "Using creativity to bring people together and make a positive impact is one of the most fulfilling things I can do as an artist," Bonner said.
