POSTPONED: Community Handprint Painting on
Black Lives Matter Mural Rescheduled to August 6
Organizers set new date because of heat advisory
What: Artists creating a mural on Tacoma's Tollefson Plaza steps invite the public to add their handprints in paint, continuing the community involvement aspect of the Black Lives Matter project.
Handprint painting planned for this weekend has been rescheduled to August 6 because of the expected heat advisory.
The BLM Mural Project Tacoma<https://sites.google.com/view/blacklivesmattermural-tacoma/home> is a months-long effort to recognize the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and the local Black community. Public surveys and focus groups ensured the community's input was included in the mural design.
When: Saturday, August 6, from 1-5 p.m.
Where: Tollefson Plaza, 1548 Commerce Street, downtown Tacoma
Who: Dionne Bonner, lead artist on the project, will be available for interviews, along with local artists and project team members.
Why: The purpose of the mural is to celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history. The handprints will decorate a quilt within the mural design, communicating that we're all part of the fabric working toward racial equality together.
"Using creativity to bring people together and make a positive impact is one of the most fulfilling things I can do as an artist," Bonner said.
