In any event, the Government isn't going to just turn GPS off. Almost
everyone in the military uses GPS and is using the same receivers the rest
of us use. Go ask a National Guardsman, which Garmin he is using. Degrade
the signal, very possibly. Turn even the civilian signal clear off, rubbish.

I find it interesting that someone as concerned about safety would imply
this would NEVER happen.

While my experience working on government space systems contracts
does not include the technology or the decision loop to shut down GPS
having worked with the people who do... does not lead me to the
same conclusion.

It seems the post 911 approach is shutdown  any system that might
be used to cause mass destruction before confirming the risk.
Do you have some data I do not?

On a windly day GPS can be used to direct an object
into a facility which houses radiation....

While it is easy to say "Turn even the civilian signal clear off, rubbish"
Who would have thought the US would shut down civilian air traffic
for days!

Each captain uses their knowledge and judgement to make
decisions about risk and safety.  My experienced would not have me
telling everyone that it GPS shutdown is not a risk.
