Hello Gators,I'm using the new list server / e-mail distribution list for the first time.  Let me know if you become aware of any issues with it (such as someone not receiving it).  Our busy summer of training and racing continues...
This week's topics include...Accomplishments... Gators go Wild in Wildwood, New Hampshire, and Blue Bell!  Also, after sending out last week's Steelman results, I realized I forgot to properly recognize Maddie Mattarazzo for her 2nd place age group finish, so here goes... PODIUM!Who's Next?... Swimming in Lake George!About A Gator... So where did we come from?  Learn all about it from Mary Cook!Training Opportunities... As always, a plethora of choices!Recommended Podcasts... More from Lake Placid plus a bit on nutrition and even more on cycling aerodynamics (teaser: Will shaving your legs make you faster?).
Happy Birthday!:Happy Birthday wishes to Chris Reiter who celebrates his birthday this coming Sunday, August 24!  Sadly it's not a new age group.
Accomplishments: Another great weekend including possibly the first Gator participant in an event in New Hampshire...Tri the Wildwoods (Wildwood, NJ): Fresh off of their successful Steelman debut, Jason and Kerri Brannen both had superb events at this sprint tri with Kerri finishing in the top 25% of her age group and Jason in the top 30% of his age group.  Additionally, Tri Swim class swimmer, Erin Gallagher, placed 2nd in the aqua bike event... PODIUM!... Way to go, guys!Timberman - IRONMAN 70.3 (Gilford, NH): Dave Gale completed his 2nd Ironman 70.3 event of the season (Eagleman in June) with an almost identical very strong time.  This was despite losing some time on the bike due to a flat.  Dave also had a really solid swim and broke the 2 hr mark on the half marathon run, which is always a great achievement at the end of a 70.3 event.  Dave also commented that he may have hit an all-time high speed on his bike of close to 50 MPH (glad that didn't occur at the same time as the flat)... Great job, Dave!LIVESTRONG Challenge (Blue Bell, PA): I guess Bill Cooney is fully recovered from his adventures at IRONMAN Lake Placid as he participated in this fundraising event that started and ended at Montgomery County Community College.  Bill completed the 50 mile option, but also drove there to and from home and picked up a few additional miles along the way (hey, why not) for a grand total of 101 miles for the day!  This is a good warm-up for Bill's annual 200 mile birthday ride that will take place on Saturday, September 20th.  By the way, Bill's open to others joining for some of the ride (or maybe even all of it) if interested.  It will be a very early "headlamp required" start (which could be perfect for Michelle and Byron who are getting married later that day :) )... Please contact Bill if you are interested (let me know if you need his contact info).  Also, Gregg Heimer got his legs loose with a 20 mile ride at LIVESTRONG and also helped to coordinate the event... Way to help out on a great cause, Bill and Gregg!
Who's Next?: We only have one event participant that I'm aware of this weekend...Lake George Open Water Swim (Lake George, NY): Nabil Radouane is back in action participating in this event's 5K swim.  Have a great swim, Nabil!
About A Gator: When I was a kid, my Mom taught my brother and I more than we wanted to know when she presented us with the book "Where Did I Come From?".  Well, this week's edition of "About a Gator", which could also be co-titled, "About the Gators" covers where we came from (in a less shocking way) and is about the original Spring-Valley YMCA tri program founder, Mary Cook.  I'm sure you will find it as interesting as I did.
Training Opportunities: This week's training opportunities include...Tonight, 8:30pm-9:30pm: Tri Swim class (Steve is out, but Maribeth will be on-hand to offer tips/advice to new swimmers)Tuesday, 8:30pm-9:30pm: Yoga classWednesday: The usual morning (10am-11am) and evening (8:30pm-9:30pm) Tri Swim classes.Thursday, 8pm-9:30pm: Bike trainer workout on the Y pool deck.  For anyone new that is joining, a bike trainer is needed... We typically bring our own.  If you do not have one, but would like to participate, let me know and I'll see if I can locate one for you.Saturday morning: TBD.  We're working on a bike ride location; this will probably be followed by an optional run... Stay tuned!Labor Day Weekend OWS (and REMINDER about Reading Open Water Swim on Sat, 9/13): Also, weather permitting, we're definitely going to have an Open Water Swim on Saturday, 8/30, at Blue Marsh possibly with an optional bike ride and/or run afterwards.  And we're even thinking about a cookout to wrap things up.  This is a great warm-up for anyone that is considering the Reading Open Water Swim that is taking place at Blue Marsh on Saturday, 9/13 and seems to be a great option for anyone interested in trying a new distance  (0.6mi, 1.2mi, and 2.4mi distance options; only $50 to register)... http://www.readingtriathlon.com/Open-Water-Swim-p/ows14.htm
Recommended Podcasts: More Lake Placid race reports and a couple from the TriSpecific Friday Fat Black series...Endurance Nation has posted additional Ironman Lake Placid race reports from age group athletes (total of four as of now)... http://www.endurancenation.us/podcasts/TriSpecific Friday Fat Black is a weekly podcast that is focused on Ironman distance racing.  The two most recent podcasts (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/trispecific-ironman-triathlon/id848817185?mt=2) include...An interview with a former F18 pilot that completed his first full Ironman in Switzerland (same weekend as IMLP) and has an interesting nutrition approach (fat adapted, which is very much the opposite of the usual carb loading approach we're used to... after listening to it, I don't think I'm switching any time soon, but perhaps you will find it interesting). An interview with Specialized's head of R&D who discusses the latest and greatest tips/tricks/gear related to becoming more aerodynamically efficient on your bike.  Guys, if you've been wondering whether or not to shave your legs, here's the podcast for you. :)
Have a great week!  Go Gators!

Tonight, 8:30pm-9:30pm: Tri Swim class (Steve is out, but Maribeth will be on-hand to offer tips/advice to new swimmers)
Tuesday, 8:30pm-9:30pm: Yoga class
Wednesday: The usual morning (10am-11am) and evening (8:30pm-9:30pm) Tri Swim classes.
Thursday, 8pm-9:30pm: Bike trainer workout on the Y pool deck.  For anyone new that is joining, a bike trainer is needed... We typically bring our own.  If you do not have one, but would like to participate, let me know and I'll see if I can locate one for you.
Saturday morning: TBD.  We're working on a bike ride location; this will probably be followed by an optional run... Stay tuned!
Labor Day Weekend OWS (and REMINDER about Reading Open Water Swim on Sat, 9/13): Also, weather permitting, we're definitely going to have an Open Water Swim on Saturday, 8/30, at Blue Marsh possibly with an optional bike ride and/or run afterwards.

Recommended Podcasts: More Lake Placid race reports and a couple from the TriSpecific Friday Fat Black series...
Endurance Nation has posted additional Ironman Lake Placid race reports from age group athletes (total of four as of now)... http://www.endurancenation.us/podcasts/
TriSpecific Friday Fat Black is a weekly podcast that is focused on Ironman distance racing.  The two most recent podcasts (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/trispecific-ironman-triathlon/id848817185?mt=2) include...
An interview with a former F18 pilot that completed his first full Ironman in Switzerland (same weekend as IMLP) and has an interesting nutrition approach (fat adapted, which is very much the opposite of the usual carb loading approach we're used to... after listening to it, I don't think I'm switching any time soon, but perhaps you will find it interesting).
An interview with Specialized's head of R&D who discusses the latest and greatest tips/tricks/gear related to becoming more aerodynamically efficient on your bike.  Guys, if you've been wondering whether or not to shave your legs, here's the podcast for you. :)

Have a great week!  Go Gators!

Great job Don....thanks for keeping us informed and highlighting everyone's successes! Way to go, guys! >> Timberman - IRONMAN 70.3 (Gilford, NH): Dave Gale completed his 2nd Ironman 70.3 event of the season (Eagleman in June) with an almost identical very strong time. Great job, Dave! >> LIVESTRONG Challenge (Blue Bell, PA): I guess Bill Cooney is fully recovered from his adventures at IRONMAN Lake Placid as he participated in this fundraising event that started and ended at Montgomery County Community College. >> >> Who's Next?: We only have one event participant that I'm aware of this weekend... >> Lake George Open Water Swim (Lake George, NY): Nabil Radouane is back in action participating in this event's 5K swim.
