This discussion of backups for autopilot and hydraulic steering system seem
more than sensible.

Nordhavn's come with a backup tiller that steers the boat
from the cockpit using only the rudder shaft using a big L shaped
bar.  While this is the ultimate backup, it will make hand steering
after an autopilot failure seem like fun!

Though I modified the handle to allow tying off the rudder, and
have a compass ready for use in the cockpit, (you can not
see forward) I really dread the times when I will be using it.

It would be good if the autopilot
driving this unit allowed you to manually actuate the rudders like manual
steering.  I have not seen an autopilot that allowed the operator to
control the rudders though.

What autopilots do not allow you to turn the rudder left/right
with a switch,  knob, jog lever, keyboard etc.
