Just 4 days after reporting a Loggerhead Shrike on our farm, a first winter
gray phase Northern Shrike is now at the same irrigation pond. With the
Loggerhead image still fresh in my mind, this individual was stockier, much
less black banding through the eye, and had a brown wash on the breast.
It's call was also much more melodic and complex than the Loggerhead's
raspy two note call I heard a few days ago. I have submitted a photo of the
Northern Shrike to ebird for those interested in seeing it (it was feeding
on an American Goldfinch). At the same time, I also had 3 Common Ravens
calling and flying over the field directly south of us, just north of
Highway 8 at Kastnerville, east of Sebringville.
Our farm is at 4129 road 130, Sebringville,
