Want to Know What Math Sounds Like?
Come hear Tacoma Singing Society perform Timothy Takach's
As the Sunflower Turns on Her God
which translates two related mathematical concepts into music
--- the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence.

The golden ratio occurs naturally in things like roses, pinecones, and other plants. It is also believed to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing proportions and is sought after and desired in art, architecture, and in this and few other cases, music.
The Fibonacci sequence was discovered by Leonardo of Pisa (Fibonacci) in the early 13th century. In his book Liber Abaci, he posed a question using the reproduction rate of rabbits as his example, and discovered a sequence of numbers where, starting with 1, one adds the current number to the previous number to get the next number.
Dividing a number in the Fibonacci sequence by its predecessor gives us a close approximation to Phi. As you perform this function higher and higher in the sequence, the answer is alternately higher and lower than Phi; approaching it, but never reaching it.
Takach uses these mathematical constructs to frame the harmony, rhythm and text for this piece, tightrope walking the line between art and science.

A concert carefully woven with threads of inspiration, exhilaration, absurdity and joy.
Join us for this celebration of the things that comprise and connect us all.
The Fabric of the Universe program is a curated collection of pieces on the themes of time, space, and mathematics, as well as fabric, both literal and metaphorical. The program is sourced from wide and far in geography--pieces sung in English, French, Slovenian, Swedish, Latin, Greek, Spanish, and Sanskrit, as well as in time--16th century to present day (present day meaning last week when the young singers from South Sound Youth Choir collaborated in the composition of an original piece which will debut at the concert). Pianists Jinshil Yi and Amy Boers will be presenting music for four hands.
