Hello Ontbirders,
Today, Albert Boisvert and I went south from Trenton into Prince Edward
County. It was a sunny but very cold day and there was very little bird
activity. Heading towards Prince Edward Point from Milford along County
Road 10, we saw 8 WILD TURKEYS in a field just before the junction of County
Roads 10 &13.
Travelling along County Road 13 towards Prince Edward Point, we saw a small
flock of waxwings. We stopped and counted 16 CEDAR WAXWINGS and 5 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS. The flock was between house numbers 3200 and 3300.
When we arrived at Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area we went to the
harbour area near the banding station and saw LONG TAILED DUCKS, MALLARDS,
CANADA GEESE and 1 AM. WIDGEON.
Upon leaving the area (1:30 PM) we had gone approximately 1/2 mile from the
banding station when we stopped to look at two birds on the road. They
turned out to be BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and in checking the trees where they had
flown, there were many more - we estimated numbers well in excess of 100.
They were in the shrubs and on the ground on both sides of the road. We sat
in the car and watched 20 - 30 of them land 10 feet in front of us on the
gravel road to pick up grit. There were many others in the trees and shrubs
right beside the car. We noticed that there was a large amount of droppings
on the road left by the waxwings for about 50 feet along the road. We had
excellent close up views of the birds and watched for about 20 minutes
before travelling on. The birds were slightly west of a utility pole that
was marked #455. Look for droppings on the road and check the adjacent
shrubbery on both sides of the road.
Travelling west along County Road 1, we saw 4 more WILD TURKEYS on the North
side of County Road 1 just west of McFall Road.
