B - 52 Bombs

Maybe this is getting too far off subject, too, but I have stood in the
Creator made by a 1000 or 2000 lb bomb from a B - 52. One could build their
house in it, and walk away for 50 yards, and not see even the roof. The
trees were knocked flat, and many away, from the concussion, for a fee
hundred yards. The explosions (only North Vietnamese Army experienced this)
made the ground ripple as does water in a pond.

Jim,

The B-17s were a lot smaller than the B-52s and so were their bombs.  The
B-17 is smaller than a typical passenger jet now.  The craters I played in
were maybe 15 feet wide and maybe 2 feet deep.  They were stitched across a
field with one every 100 feet or so, and the last one went thru the roof.
By the time I was born, the building had been repaired, but the craters
were still there.  The topsoil was blown away, leaving wonderful play sand
exposed.  The one closest to the apartment building was clean sand, but the
ones father away were filled with ragged metal fragments from the bomb
casings.

Each time I see the ads for the charity for the filipino kids picking
trash in the dump ... I have to smile a bit.  Been there, did that ... but
in germany.  When I was 4, I took off with some older kids and picked trash
all day with them, collecting metal for scrap.  At the end of the day I
turned in my collection and received a few coins from the scrap dealer.  At
that age I had no idea what coins were, though I had heard ya could throw
them in the fountain ... so I did.  Then I went home and the grandparents
freaked out.  There was an immediate rush to the fountain but someone else
had gotten them first and they were gone.  Gramps was quite upset, those
coins could have supported the family for awhile.  Just an odd memory from
a time long long ago and a place far far away ... something the average
american never experienced.

Meanwhile, let's get back to boats!
