Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsHere is information for boaters coming down the river from Hoppies to
Green Turtle Bay. I made the trip myself last month. First I stopped overnight
at Kaskaskia Lock, Mississippi mile 117.
Next I anchored overnight at Little River Diversion Channel (mile 48).
Water levels have dropped over five feet since I did the trip last month and
this does not look like a viable anchorage now. If I were planning the trip
again, I would check out an anchorage at mile 1.5. I have seen boats
anchor along the shore between Angelo Towhead and US60 highway bridge out of
the channel. Trawlers can cover the 116 miles from Kaskaskia in one day
with the help of the Mississippi current. Please let me know if you anchor
here and I will pass the info on to other boaters.
The anchorage at Ohio mile 966 is no longer possible. A new 300ft wide
channel has been dredged at this location for tows to pass through.
The lockmaster at Lock 53 (mile 963) recommended anchoring below the dam
on the Kentucky side.
Finally, Cumberland Towhead, (mile 924) is still good!

Be very careful in Angelos Towhead @ MM 1.5 on the UMR. Do not go up into
it at the moment past the island point. The water is historically low and
the chute above the island is full of dead heads and nasties. Check with
Fern @ Hoppies on the current condition of Boston Chute which is above
Angelos a few miles. It may be a beter alternative. The UMR looks like a
mini grand canyon at the moment with our water levels.

Fern is recommending Angelos Towhead anchorage. There is no recent report
from Boston Chute.
The instruction is to only anchor at the tip of the island and not to go
into the creek next to the island. I just heard the Army Corp has dumped a
lot of tow hawser line in the creek there.
