collectionspace 0.7 administration

Hi,

I'm a linux administrator at Geisel Library, UCSD.

I just installed Collectionspace 0.7.

It seems to be running.  I can connect to cpace-ui, login with the test account, create accounts, but the Administration button (and other buttons) are grayed out.

I searched the wiki for how to administrate collectionspace and can find a list of tasks, but no further explanation of how to perform the tasks.

http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/collectionspace/Documentation+for+CollectionSpace+Technical+Adminstrators

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron,

Glad to hear you're looking at CollectionSpace!  You're correct that the administration documentation and capabilities are not very well developed yet (though that wiki page looks like a good start -- I hadn't seen that one yet).  I'm managing the deployment projects at UC Berkeley, so our team could talk about how we're working with the system right now.  I'll let someone from the development team talk about the plan for rolling out administrative capabilities.  Are you looking at things like roles and permissions?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi, Ronald, welcome to the CollectionSpace community!

the Administration button (and other buttons) are grayed out.

We're still working on adding functionality to CollectionSpace. In general, if a link is grayed out or otherwise disabled, it's because that functionality is not yet implemented.

Regarding Administration: In the 0.7 release, a preview of User Administration should be available through the Administration link in the header bar, under the CollectionSpace logo. Is that the link that is not working for you, or are you looking at a different "Administration button"?

Hi,

Sorry I wasn't clearer.  The "Administration" button works, but on the Administration page, only the "Users" button is active.  I understand now that the other buttons (eg, "Roles and Permissions") aren't implemented yet.

Thanks,

Ron

Hi,

I'm trying to add an Apache frontend; that is, apache jk mount to cspace.

I notice that only the default server is listening on 8009 and only on 127.0.0.1.

Both the default and cspace server.xml seem to have 8009 configured.

Does the order in which I start the servers matter?

If I start cspace first, maybe it would listen on 8009, rather than the default (nuxeo?) server?

Thanks,

Ron

That's accurate.

You can find designs for the user interface for managing roles and
permissions - to be implemented in one or more future releases of
CollectionSpace - here:

http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/collectionspace/Wireframes+-+Administration+-+Roles+and+Permissions

This functionality is already implemented - at least in an initial
iteration - within the CollectionSpace services, so it is possible to
write your own programs or scripts, in nearly any programming or
scripting language, desktop-, mobile- or web-based, to interact with
the services, to create and manage roles and permissions.  The
application programming interfaces (API) for interacting with these
services are listed here, under "Authorization":

http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/collectionspace/Service+Layer+-+Services+Currently+Available

As you've correctly inferred, in a later release of
CollectionSpace, you'll also be able to manage roles and permissions
via the system's user interface.

You can find wireframes for many of the 'screens' in the
CollectionSpace system, linked from the "Wireframes" page on the
CollectionSpace project wiki:

http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/collectionspace/Wireframes

Your feedback on these current and proposed future user interface
designs is very much welcomed!

Both the default and cspace server.xml seem to have 8009 configured.

Does the order in which I start the servers matter?

Yes.  To the best of my knowledge, with clarification and correction
welcome from others on these lists, the Nuxeo server - currently run
from the JBoss 'default' server directory - must be started first, and
must fully come up, before the CSpace server is started.  If this
condition is not met, the CSpace server will fail during its startup
sequence, after unsuccessfully trying to connect to Nuxeo.

If I start cspace first, maybe it would listen on 8009, rather than the default (nuxeo?) server?

A few cursory thoughts on configuring the AJP ports for these
servers are now available in a comment on a newly-added
CollectionSpace issue:

"Document network port use, configuration for the Services layer"
http://issues.collectionspace.org/browse/CSPACE-2184

If you do have the opportunity to experiment with this, please feel
free to add comments to that issue (see
http://wiki.collectionspace.org/display/collectionspace/Issue+Tracking)

  • it looks like you already have a JIRA account to create or comment
on issues there, which is terrific - as well as to share your
experiences here on the 'Talk' and/or 'Tech' lists.

Thanks!
Aron

Ron,

I agree with all of Aron's responses -see below for context.
Additionally, if Aron has not already mentioned, the 'cspace' domain ports
are generally +100 of the 'nuxeo'/'default' domain's.  For example, the
'default' domain's AJP port is 8009 and the 'cspace' AJP port is 8109.

That said, I would be interested to know more about what you're attempting
to do.  Are you writing your own web app that uses the CollectionSpace
services directly?

Thanks,

Richard Millet
