I noted that organized sailing was rejecting kite sails. Please let me
explain:  ISAF which is the International Sailing Federation ruled last week
that kite sails would not endorsed in the water speed records at this time.
As Georgs noted David Culp has been active with kite sails since 1978--and
he responds with an editoral at:

A kite equipted boat was in the Sydney to Hobart race, but because of the
conditions did not fly the kite.  Concerns were expressed by other boats
about right of way and safety issues.  The ruling was made that the boat
would be allowed to fly the kite in that race--but there were specific
restictions.  The general trend is to not allow kites in the racing
community.

It is certainly an interesting concept and will be very interesting to see
what evolves with the technology.
