National Coalition for Literacy Discussion List
View all threadsHere is a quick CEF update from new ED Sheryl Cohen.
Here is some additional background:
A chart with the funding levels of the major program categories that is provided to the subcommittee prior to markup leaked out this afternoon. I received it from multiples sources, as did Sheryl. I’ve never seen it leaked so widely the day before markup before — not sure what to make of it. Anyway, the chart shows adult education state grants level funded at $581.955 million. It does indicate whether they have increased adult ed national leadership money. As you’ll recall, the President requested an increase for national leadership only. In the past, the Senate has shown some deference to this request, although I’m pretty sure an increase to national leadership is DOA in the House.
But bear in mind this chart may be inaccurate — we need to see confirmation in the actual bill when it’s released by the full committee — probably later this week.

Dear CEF Members:
I. Senate Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Update
This afternoon, information is starting to dribble out regarding tomorrow’s Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee mark-up. While some preliminary funding charts are out, we plan on circulating those numbers along with a more complete and accurate update after tomorrow’s mark-up.
In the immediate, CQ is reporting that the National Institutes of Health would get a $2 billion increase in the draft Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill. The information also indicated a $400 million boost for research to combat Alzheimer’s.
My best,
Sheryl
