Puget Sound Book Artists 9th Annual Members’ Exhibition Reflections on Accomplishments Exhibition Dates: June 3 – July 31, 2019 Featuring Artists with Unique and Original Books The public is invited to attend special, free events that will run alongside the exhibit All events will be held in Collins Memorial Library Opening reception and awards presentation Thursday, June 13, 5:00-6:30 pm, The Link (Refreshments in the Pacific NW Room) Artists Conversation July 8, 5:30-7:30 pm, Library Room 053 Panel Discussion July 25, 5:30-7:30 pm, Library Room 053 As the PSBA approaches the year leading up to the tenth anniversary of its Members’ Exhibition, the membership took this milestone as an opportunity to reflect on what they have accomplished as book artists. Thoughts of what makes a book an achievement is as varied as the members of the PSBA themselves; from the projects that exceeded all expectations, to the books that won awards, to the structures that presented a challenge to create, and everything in-between. Sometimes an accomplishment is as obvious as being able to complete a project. Kim Izenman worked on her concept for Red Rock for five years before finally finding the perfect structure to make her book a reality. At other times success is a goal met despite all odds. During an incredibly busy and hectic 2018, Nancy Brones set herself the challenge of making a piece every day of June by working on used tea bags. The result is Tea in June, an example of managing to make time to create in the face of life getting in the way. And still other times, accomplishments feel less like an achievement, and more like a struggle. Kathryn Kim’s In Memoriam pays tribute to her friend Elizabeth Halfacre, and reflects on the difficulty of dealing with heavy emotions, such as loss. Jane Carlin, Director of the Collins Library and Vice President of the organization, is looking forward to the installation: "The Puget Sound Book Artists have a following and now an excellent reputation in the South Sound and beyond. It is truly an honor to host this exhibit and each year I am astonished at the creative and inspiring art on display.” We, the curators, are delighted and inspired by the great diversity of approaches and technical skill shown in these works.
