I spent a month on the Erie Canal this summer cruising from Oswago southward and then across the Western arm of the Erie, also called the Old Barge Canal. As Fred has mentiond FairPort is a must stop along the canal but there are many other wonderful places to visit such as Lyons.

The last few years, ever since I moved up to Fort Edward on the Champlain
Canal, my cruising has been mostly weekend beer runs. This past weekend
was the Waterford tugboat Roundup and when it finished, I headed west.
Just about to shove off from Canajoharie, westbound.
It is so nice to be cruising long distance on the canals again! They're
planning a party for me in fairport, one of my favorite spots.
