The current issue of Waterway Guide online referred to a new BoatUS site
that compiles information about state taxes that might affect boaters,
length of stay before tax liability attaches, tax rate, etc.

Here's a link to the BoatUS site and the Waterway Guide short article:

That's a great resource to compare State Excise, User and other boat taxes.
Regrettably and perhaps unavoidably, the missing part are the local
government (City and County) registration and property taxes. These can far
outweigh the annual State boating taxes. It's often difficult to ferret-out
that information because local government websites and laws and ordinances
are often difficult to intepret.

Of course, this issue is relevant only to those that have the luxury to live
in one State and Local Government jurisdiction but can title and register
their boat (and boat trailer) in another State and/or local government area.
In the case that I'm familiar with, the local property tax is about five
times as much as the annual State tax.

Maximum annual registration cost in Oklahoma is $150 and
you can get a discount if you do three years at a time!

The Excise tax is a one-time thing at purchase.
