The City of Tacoma is seeking community groups who are interested in having a mural painted in their neighborhood in order to reclaim spaces targeted by vandalism and graffiti. This Community Based Mural Program will pair teams of trained and qualified artists with selected community groups. Artist teams will design and implement murals that reflect the stories and input provided by community participants.
The Community Based Mural Program requires participation by community groups who are committed to their neighborhoods and agree to be actively involved in the process. Selected groups will be provided with a funded mural, including supplies and artist compensation; a mural-artist team to implement ideas; technical assistance and general promotion of the project. In return, the selected community groups will assist the mural-artist team through community input and coordination, and in maintaining the mural after completion.
Proposed mural walls must be on commercial or public property and located in a Community Based Services (CBS) area - permission of property owners is required.
Community groups interested in applying may download the Community Based Mural Program Call to Community Groups at www.tacomaculture.org/arts/opportunities.asphttp://www.tacomaculture.org/arts/opportunities.asp. Information is also available by calling (253) 591-5191 or by e-mailing nstrom-avila@cityoftacoma.orgmailto:nstrom-avila@cityoftacoma.org. Deadline for submissions is May 28, 2010.
This opportunity is an initiative of the Graffiti Reduction Through Community Based Art team, part of the City of Tacoma's Safe and Clean effort.
