I have used both very expensive (and heavy) Plath Sextants and others.
However I carry a Davis high end model--it cost about $150--and can be easily adjusted--because of the weight--and risk of banging the expensive model--I prefer the Davis.
I also have found that there a times where a good celestial fix is impossiable--but if you look for it--there is a break almost every day when you can get a fix.
Also for celestial you need a good time instrument. With a radio and a good digital watch--this is adequate for emergency navigation.
For emergency I think that the Davis is adequate--again lots of practice is necessary.
