The St. Lawrence was the most enjoyable portion of our 6,000 mile trip from
Chicago to Trinidad. It is a wonderful magical trip. I suggest however that
you are very careful in your planning if you are thinking of traveling the
St. Lawrence upbound. In the 900 mile trip down the St. Lawrence we did not
meet a single upbound sailboat or trawler. (Locals excluded)
There is one section were you must go up river to reach Montreal. The lock
leaves you out a mile or two downriver. With the current slowing us down
we were reduced to 2 kts at 1800 rpm (normal high cruise of 7-8kts). When we
went through the rapids, going downriver of course, we attained 14.5kts at
1,000 rpm.
