High winds swept across Western Washington on the night of Wednesday, March 11th. Winds at Alpental Snoqualmie Passhttps://www.summitatsnoqualmie.com/alpental reached an astounding 134 mph. Closer to sea level, winds were recorded as high as 45 mph in Bellevue. The windstorm caused many power outages, with a reported 40,000 in King County still without power on the morning of Thursday, March 12th. Below are some tips from Puget Sound Energy on how to prepare for and safely handle a windstorm.
Before
-
Compile an emergency kit and keep it handy.
-
Unplug sensitive electronic equipment such as computers.
-
Know which natural gas appliances will continue to operate if there is an outage:
- Natural gas water heaters
- Gas log fireplaces
- Gas ovens and ranges. If it uses electric ignition, have matches nearby to light the flame.
- Natural gas barbeques.
During
-
Keep track of the storm as it develops. The websites of the National Weather Service and local news stations have interactive weather radars.
-
If there is a power outage:
- Turn off lights and appliances.
- Leave one light switch on so you'll know when your power is restored.
- Use flashlights instead of candles.
- Keep your freezer and refrigerator doors closed; open them only when it is necessary.
- Never use a gas range, indoor cooker, charcoal, or gas barbeque for heating.
- Close curtains and drapes to keep the heat in.
- Wear warm clothes in layers.
- If the indoor temperature drops to 55 degrees or below, open your faucets so there is a constant drip to prevent pipes from freezing.
Please reach out to the Safety Committee (safety@vuecrest.netmailto:safety@vuecrest.net) with any safety issues or concerns.

Trash/Recycle/Yard waste tote etiquette
[cid:image005.png@01DCB8A9.F56F7B20]
Here's a few reminders regarding trash/recycle/yard waste tote etiquette in the Vuecrest community.
- Totes should be put out the day before collection and then pulled back in the day after collection
- Totes should be stored on your property in a place not visible from the street
- Place totes at or nearest the end of your driveway for collection only
- Secure all bin lids in the down position, especially the garbage bin to ensure lids are down and garbage is contained and helps keep birds and other critters from making a mess before collection
- Ask a neighbor to put your totes out or bring them in if you are planning to be out of town
- Never leave totes out on the street for an extended period
- Promptly clean-up any trash or other debris that may have occurred near your property during collection day
