Visitors:
We thank all of today's observers and those interested in the ongoing Hawk
Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level of Hawk Tower
is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The 2nd and lower
levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe precautions (social
distancing). Thank you for your understanding and involvement.
Weather:
Warm clear day with consistent north/northeast winds, promoting raptor
movement. Warm temperatures not exceeding mid-20s Celsius and very good
visibility of over 20 km. Partly cloudy but mostly clear blue skies.
Raptor Observations:
Northern winds promoted observable raptor movement, with good amounts of
Broad-winged (24), American Kestrel (45), Red-tailed (14) and Northern
Harrier (9). A Merlin also made an appearance. Resident Bald Eagles and
Osprey were also present.
Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptor related observations included a variety of warblers including
Cape-may, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, and Chestnut-sided. As well, large
amounts of current resident marsh birds were also present such as Great
Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Double-crested Cormorants and Mute Swans. Cedar
waxwings and American Goldfinches also made notable appearances. Many Tree
Swallows were also present.
Predictions:
Tomorrow's weather conditions are expected to mirror todays, with the
northernly winds promoting good raptor observation conditions. We expect to
see similar raptors to what we saw today, including American Kestrels and
Broad-winged hawks. Hopefully more Sharp-Shinneds also make an appearance.
