Hi Mel,  When I had plans to come across from China, I was looking very
carefully at when and where.  I was looking for westerly winds and currents
as I feel that bashing into something for 3-4000 miles not only increases
your fuel burn, but put undue stress on crew and boat.  June and July were
the good months to go as one could go north past Japan and up to Alaska to
catch favorable winds and currents.  It was also the shortest rout by 1500
miles.  January-March dictated going south and winds were pretty much
against you.  Jimmy Connell's book makes a lot of sense for both power and
sail except that you don't have to worry about no wind areas.  I was
planning on doing this in a Diesel Duck, but health issues got in the way.
