CEF Hill Advocacy Day - July 17, from 1pm-4:30pm

I suspect this opportunity is mainly relevant to those of you in the Virginia/DC/Maryland area. (Although you are welcome to fly in for the day if you live outside the area!)

For the last couple of years CEF has organized a CEF-wide Hill Day "to make a coordinated and visual statement in support of education funding.” This year, it’s Wednesday, July 17. Obviously it is hoped that some CEF members can fly in their members from different parts of the country, because ideally they try to set up the appointments with members where there is a geographical connection. But folks based here in DC are welcome. And summer interns also — it’s a nice opportunity for them, and you never know, you might have an intern that is from a key Congressional district. I was in a meeting a couple of years ago with a Texas member, and the intern with us, who went to school in Texas, was the hit of the meeting.

It’s also a good opportunity to make connections with the rest of education community here in D.C. And you get a free t-shirt!

And each group will meet with approximately three Hill offices, and will be led by an experienced person who has done led a meet gin before. CEF sets up the appointments. They’ll send us a list of the meetings in advance, provide the folders and CEF stuff.

How to sign up

Let me know by June 20 if you would like to participate and I’ll register everyone (I just need name, organization, what state/congressional district you live in).
Optional: On Friday June 21, come to a CEF Hill Teams training on the basics of doing lobbying visits plus a primer on CEF’s work.
Block your calendar from 1pm-4:30pm on July 17. We/they will follow up with you as the date draws nearer.

Nominate Someone to Receive an Award at the CEF Gala
Some of you may be working with a member of Congress who you believe is worthy of a CEF award at the fall CEF gala. Let me know if you have any ideas to recommend to the NCL members/board. We’ve actually had two nominees receive awards in recent years: Senator Jack Reed and Congressman Rueben Hinojosa. You can take a look at past awardees https://cef.org/events/cef-awardees/ here. Definitely look at that before suggesting anyone because a lot of the folks that I’m sure will immediately come to your mind have received CEF awards recently.

Generally speaking, winning nominees tend not to be people who have championed just one area, but multiple things — and with a particular focus on being a champion for funding. They can be members of Congress from either party (sometimes CEF struggles to get Republican nominees), Administration officials (yeah, I know), and/or people working outside of government on "national funding initiatives that help students and promote learning."

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi everyone,

Following up on my message below re: the CEF gala. Some likely candidates who haven’t received an award include Reps. Lee and Roybal-Allard, and Sens. Alexander and Murphy. If any NCL members have had good interactions with any of these folks (especially with regard to funding) and think NCL should nominate them, let me know. I would LOVE to recognize Barbara Lee, who has been so helpful to me in so many ways, but not sure about adult ed. Anyone in her district?
