FREE gas mower recycling event April 24-25

Is your old gas mower doing more harm than good? Recycle it for free and make room for a new environmentally-friendly mulching mower or push reel mower. City of Tacoma and Pierce County residents can recycle their gas mowers free of charge, April 24-25, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the City of Tacoma Recycling Center (Tacoma Landfill, 3510 S. Mullen St.).

Why should you turn in your old gas mower? Gas mowers spew harmful pollutants into the air. According to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, using a gas-powered lawn mower for one hour creates as much pollution as driving 140 miles. Plus you can use a new mulching mower or push reel mower to grasscycle.

Grasscycling is a simple, natural approach to lawn care that leaves grass clippings on the lawn after mowing to decompose quickly, releasing valuable nutrients back into the soil.

By grasscycling, you can:

  • Save time: No grass clippings to manage in a bag, at the curb or haul to the landfill.

  • Save money: Reduce water and fertilizer use.

  • Save the environment: Eliminate or reduce air and noise pollution.
