We did not go to Ottawa although were really did want to. We did the "Great
Loop" in 1985-86 just as the Tenn-Tom officially opened.
There seem to be almost no Loopers on this site anymore. Can anyone tell me
where I can find them on the web?

Greg,
Are you making a distinction here between US "Registered" and US
"Documented"? Our boat is US "Documented" and we had no issues with
any 15% tax in Canada when we did the "Triangle Loop" through Canada and
the St. Lawrence.

Interestingly, I passed 6 canadian boaters in lake Champlain, heading

Whitehall were apprised of the closing but they could not go through
the St Lawrence because they were US registered only and would have to
pay the 15% tax if brought into Canada. They decided to wait at
Whitehall where they at least had power.

I think the issue is only for Canadians who buy and keep their boats in the
US and have not paid Canadian taxes on them. IF they go into Canada with the
boats, they will have to pay. Generally speaking, US residents should not
have any tax problems taking a boat into Canada, whether state registered or
federally documented, unless they are planning to leave it for more than one
season. Then it gets a bit complicated, with some Customs districts taking a
different interpretation of the rules than others.

Hi, Ginger.
The AGLCA in its "wisdom" canceled the old mailing list and went to a "forum" system. That system is, to me, an unbelievably unwieldy and complicated mess! It is my opinion that this new system is a basic reason that looper traffic is much more limited.
The Great Loop List here is much like the old AGLCA mailing list and is maybe not particularly well known to loopers.
I also expect that you will see considerably more loopers here later in the year after the bottleneck in the Erie Canal has cleared and also when loopers are starting southbound from the Great Lakes.

We did not go to Ottawa although were really did want to. We did the
"Great
Loop" in 1985-86 just as the Tenn-Tom officially opened.
There seem to be almost no Loopers on this site anymore. Can anyone tell
me
where I can find them on the web?

I agree with Mac 100% about the AGLCA "forum" web site. Yahoo group
listservs are FREE and can be set up in 5 minutes. Yet they don't do it. Ask
anything you want about the Loop here and you will get some very good
informative answers from people who have done the Loop or are doing it this
year.
I've been on this list more than 10 years and think this is the best Great
Loop information out there. Some of the other members have been on as long
or longer than I.
One of our great Loop moments was finally meeting Tug44 Fred in person when
we did the Loop last year, even though we didn't see the alleged John Deere
tractor chick magnet.

I am new to this site (6 mo) and my husband and I are planning for the loop in 16 months, 3 days, 10 minutes and 5 seconds and I love reading all the information, opinions, pictures, etc. This site is perfect for my preparations. You folks are funny, informative and yes opinionated! J
And indeed, I can’t wait to meet “Tug 44” and the Green machine. Thanks for all the great posts!

As with any email list or Internet opinions, you are required to sort it out and use what you think is useful and disregard that which is rubbish. You will always get both on the Internet.
Here with regular users, it is no different. You will find an association of good credibility with some and not-so-good credibility with others. It takes some time for you to figure out who the good credibility folks are vs the bad credibility.
Just because one has an opinion or writes a response does not mean it is correct. There is a lot of bad information floating around the Internet.
I was on this list for 8 years before doing the Loop. I collected emails from credible folks in folders for each State, one for Canada and subfolders, the rivers, etc. Then when I did the Loop, I could simply refer to those emails in the folder as we traveled into each portion of the Loop.
It also allowed me to help others with it.
