9/23 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center. 9:45am-1PM. sunny & partly cloudy, high tide-receding, 65-68F. Very birdy on the grounds today. Along the trails and trees: 5 American Redstarts, 3 Catbirds, about 7 Eastern Phoebes (one sat on the deck railing even as 5 of us where on the deck watching it); plus along the marsh edge 2 Phoebes were hawking insects and bathing as the tide receded, 2 House finches, 1 Northern Flicker, 1 Downy woodpecker, 3 Blue jays, 3 Cardinals -2 in a bird bath, 1 Mockingbird, 2 Yellow warblers, 1 Carolina wren popping into a hole in the Bass wood tree, 2 Black & white warblers, 3 Common Yellowthroats and 1 Mourning dove by the parking lot. A large flock of DC Cormorants flew over the marsh. On the marsh: Around 12:40PM a huge mixed flock of shorebirds was flying around the marsh farther out- including the large flock of DC Cormorants (about 200), 4 Snowy Egrets, 10 Great Egrets, many Ring billed and Herring gulls and a small flock of "peeps", plus 2 Mute swans farther out.
