Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their efforts and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
Today was chilly with a low of 0 C and a high of 3.5 C during observation
hours. Extensive cloud cover was also present throughout the whole day with
periodic episodes of snow fall. Wind was a consistent strong westerly as
well.
Raptor Observations:
Although not as slow as recent days, raptor turnout was low with only 2
Turkey Vultures, 2 Northern Harriers, 2 Sharpies, 2 Bald Eagles, 1 Merlin,
and 1 Peregrine. Buteos made a slight return with 27 Red Tails and 3 Red
Shoulders. We were also happy to see the appearance of two Golden Eagles
during the day.
Non-raptor Observations:
Marsh birds continue to lead non-raptor diversity, although at slightly
lower abundance, especially for Ring-Necked Ducks (2200) and American Coots
(120). Low songbird movement was present, with the only notable movements
being 195 American Goldfinch and 130 Rusty Blackbirds. The highlight of the
day was the visit from a small flock of Bluebirds taking a rest in the
nearby Willow Tree.

Predictions:
Tomorrow's conditions are expected to be slightly similar although at more
friendly levels, with temperatures expecting to be slightly warmer with a
high of 6 C, as well as winds expected to be more mild, starting westerly
and ending southerly. Skies are also expected to be more clear and full of
sun. Hopefully all of these create a more encouraging environment for
raptor movement.
