Is  there a preferred way , West thru the Erie canal back thru the
Champlain or  North first?
Larry, I am not sure how big of a loop you are planning.  For example,  if
you are planning to leave the Erie Canal at Oswego and take the Rideau Canal
to Ottawa, Montreal and back to the Champlain then go west first then you
will  be with the current on the Ottawa and St, Lawrence Rivers.
If you are planning a larger loop to include the Trent-Severn Waterway then
go north first then you will be with the current on the Detroit River and
with  the wind on Lake Erie.
I have done this loop and can honestly say it includes all the best
cruising that North America has to offer. Begin with Champlain Canal  and Chambly
Canal to Montreal.  After two locks on the Saint Lawrence  Seaway take
Ottawa River to Canada's capital city where you dock downtown  at the beginning
of the historic Rideau Canal.  The next canal is the  Trent-Severn Waterway
that takes you to Georgian Bay.  It is possible  to cross Georgian Bay
directly to Tobermory but, if you have time, I recommend  you continue on Georgian
Bay Small Craft Route then the north shore of North  Channel to Sault Ste.
Marie as we did.  Turn around at 'the Soo' and return  via the south shore
of North Channel to Tobermory.  Follow the Canadian  shore of Lake Huron to
Detroit, Buffalo and Erie Canal.

I preferr up stream with locks and minimal current, then down stream with a current boost. Erie canal to Oswego canal, cross lake onterio, visit Canadian 1000 Island parks then downstream on St. Lawrence to Sorrel, then canal to Lake Champlain and Champlain Canal ( hudson River) with the current back to Erie Canal. Be sure to visit Fred at Fort Edwards. Jon.

And if you stop to visit Fred, make sure you take him out to dinner.  The knowledge of the Erie Canals that he shares with you is priceless.Tommy
