Fri 12/17. Milford, Stratford. Many birders from multiple states were at Milford Pt at dawn. No sightings yet of yesterday’s Lapwing. The tide had already covered the mudflats, and is continuing to rise. A few of us are checking plausible sites in Stratford (Sikorsky Airport, Greenway, Short Beach, etc), with no luck. Others are checking Walnut Beach and Silver Sands in Milford. No positive reports yet. At this point the best bet may be to revisit Milford Pt in the afternoon when the tide becomes low (3-4 pm).

Good Morning.
There have been quite a few Northern Lapwings here, in the US, including
the influx in 2010:
Lapwings 2010 http://lapwings2010.blogspot.com/
http://lapwings2010.blogspot.com/
Click on this link to see that memorable influx from Europe.
This lapwing in CT yesterday will become our presumed "December BOTM Bird
Of The Month", at least for the moment, until the next two weeks uncovers
something better (-:
Good Birding!

Hi Ellynne – To the best of my knowledge, this Lapwing is the second ever in Connecticut: The first was found by Phil Rusch near UCONN in late November of 2010.
This year, there have only been a few reports from our entire hemisphere, and this is where it gets really interesting!
According to eBird, the first sighting of 2021 in all of North America was less than a month ago in Newfoundland on 11/25 and it stayed there until 12/2. The next sighting was on a tiny island north of Nova Scotia , not far away, the very next day 12/3. Then on 12/10, there was a sighting on Sable Island, southeast of Nova Scotia, and the bird was last seen on 12/15.
The very next sighting was by Tom Murray on 12/16 here in Connecticut. We had moderate to light northeast winds here Wednesday into Thursday, which would be a tailwind for the Lapwing if it were flying from Sable Island. So it seems possible that all of the above sightings are of the same bird.
I’m not sure if this link will work, but check it out on eBird: https://ebird.org/map/norlap?neg=true&env.minX=-143.6139957420159&env.minY=-24.89744501683123&env.maxX=148.88600425798407&env.maxY=76.98731350772916&zh=true&gp=false&ev=Z&mr=1-12&bmo=1&emo=12&yr=cur
The bottom line is that a Northern Lapwing anywhere in North America is a really big deal!
Let’s hope someone finds it again this afternoon.
