Visitors:
Several visitors. Thanks to Matt, Ronnie and Keith for helping with today's
count.
We appreciate all the interest in the Hawk Cliff hawk watch but remind
everyone that the observation knoll is closed to members of the public and
has a 5-person limit reserved for the Hawk Counters. Thank you to all who
are
respecting these precautions. Be safe everyone and
remember the Covid-19 protocols and observe physical distancing at all
times while at the site.
Weather:
Hazy for most of the day with clouds. However, the sun was still able to
shine through and it looked to be clearing from the north later into the
afternoon. Temps ranged from 12 to 17C and moderate N winds were steady all
day bringing the birds down to the shore of Lake Erie.
Raptor Observations:
A pretty good flight today with several kettles of Broadwings numbering
150-250 birds and many others with 50-75 birds. Some decent numbers for
Sharpies and Kestrels as well. I suspect that this is the initial vanguard
of the main Broadwing flight which should happen over the course of this
week into next weekend.
Non-raptor Observations:
Some non-raptors reported today... Gray Catbird, Carolina Wrens (an adult
and a juvenile), RT Hummingbirds, N. Flickers, RB Woodpecker, N. Cardinal,
Ring-billed and Herring Gulls and Canada Geese.
Predictions:
Well forecasters are calling for SW winds for the next couple of days which
would push the bulk of the flight inland. However, keep an eye on the last
part of the week as the forecast is predicting northerly winds for at least
a couple of days which is perfect timing for a good Broadwing flight.
