Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsJoe,
When you get to the New York Canals with a boat that large, think seriously
of cruising at a top speed of 6-7 mph, and slower when passing any dock or
pier ... else the locals will have a "welcome" waiting for you at the next
lock.
The way it works here is the Sheriff phones the lock and the lock closes,
and many hours later a cop shows up to ticket you, and he will take an hour
or two to write that ticket. Their intentional slowness is to delay you
until the Canal closes for the day and you will be stuck over-nighting at
the lock in mosquito-heaven with no services and no place to go instead of
a nice port with free electric and a restaurant etc at a port just a mile
further down the canal.
Just a caution, that's how things are done here. Remember, it's the trip,
not the destination.

I should have added that we will be in a 56 foot motor yacht with 5 foot
draft.
That reminds me of a true story told by a now deceased friend here in Oklahoma. He and his wife traveled to the east almost every year to view the "changing of the colors." They had what is a common misconception out here that "yankees" tended to be unfriendly to "outsiders." These friends seemed blissfully unaware that folks here frequently project similar attitudes toward visitors!
In any event, while they were touring in upstate NY (Adirondacks) they commented to a lady storekeeper on how friendly they had found everybody. The storekeeper's reply was simply that "we sort of return the attitudes that we receive!"
As the saying goes, "Paybacks can be hell!"
