Michael,

According to an old Powerboat Guide I'm looking at, the Gulfstar 48 MY was the first Gulfstar to be built (1981-3) on a planing hull and powered to attain motoryacht speeds up to about 17 kts.  Estimates vary on the number of 48 MYs built--the guide cited above says 17 and the Gulfstar Owners Club says 23.  Construction techniques included balsa coring in the hull sides to lighten the boat.  If I were considering one, I'd want to be sure to have the hull tested for moisture by someone very knowledgeable--a soggy balsa core is NOT something you want to have to deal with!

I'm considering an early '80s, 48' Gulfstar that has been extensively
refurbished including paint, systems and interior. In addition to the normal
concerns for a boat of this vintage, what else should I be on the lookout
for in terms of potential problems: hull? engines? systems? etc?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
