While not directly trawler related, the answer may be of interest to many. If
not, so sorry!!!
Does anybody have a reference to enable the determination of how high above
sea level a location is?
When you can see the ocean/bay/sound level you can estimate pretty well. But
what about locations where you can't? I keep wondering if a Tsunami hits how
high my house property is above sea level....
Atmospheric pressure is related to height at one website; at another there is
mapping software for several hundred dollars...I assume a contour map of
altitudes would be a good source....I have not found one so far...
Another example: How high is Long Island,NY...does it protect most of the LI
Sound from an east coast Tsunami?? And if you are 25 miles up the Missippi
river how high above sea level is that>>
Thanks

Rob...
I do not know about such info...
However your altimeter on your GPS should give you a fairly good height
(altitude) above sea level.

Hi, Rob. Most paper road maps (the folding kind you put in your glove
compartment) have height above sea level of some towns and places of
interest. (I haven't seen the same info on any electronic ROAD MAP.)
That should be a good indicator, I'd think; at least you can get
elevation. FEMA and the state equivalents have information about
flood-prone areas, but it's not always available on the web.

Most topo maps will have some indication of height above sea level (MLW?).
An easy way to look at US topo maps is to use: http://terraserver-usa.com/
Get to your area of interest and make sure you have the "topo" tab selected
at the top.

The traditional source of this info is the Geological Survey. Go to:
http://nationalmap.gov/ This takes you to the national map provided
by the Geological Survey. Click on "Go to viewer", zoom to the place of
interest, click on elevation on the menu on the left, click on the place
of interest and the elevation and other information will display.

I think one of my hand held GPS units has height above sea level or maybe it
was my Deluo GPS talking to the Microsoft Streets & Trips program.

Rob:
Google Earth also provides elevation info. Click on "terrain" to make
it an active layer. Elevation will then display for the cursor location
along with lat/long.

Topographical maps give you this information. For airports, aero charts give
their altitude. I would not trust topos along the shore because many have
been eroded. In CE, you can overlay TerraServer aerial photos (which vary
widely in vintage) on top of nautical charts and see how far shorelines have
receded. For areas further inland, topos are the answer. I used them along
with a GPS to determine the distance of my property from wetland designated
areas and further determined that my house was 50' lower than the county
road.
I assume you are interested in the altitude of a specific location as
opposed to the almanac altitude of a city. For example, some part of New
Bern is 12' above sea level.

Boy! Wesley is right. It is so very easy with Google Earth. No need read
contour lines!
Thanks Wesley

Hi All
Have you ever noticed how many responses are generated by threads which are
"not directly trawler related"?
Was it a bad dream Rob or a premonition.
The websites of USGS etc are pure magic and I love Google.
However, if Rob needs (or wants) an accurate height above sea level for his
tsunami threatened property doesn't he need to know the datum point used by
the various topographers to calculate these heights??
