The exhibit features artwork by 4th grade students from Purdy Elementary school, under the artistic direction of elementary art specialist, Ms. Hannah Jay. "We are delighted to be able to work with award-winning art teacher, Hannah Jay and this talented class of 4th graders," says Stephanie Lile, museum director. "They brought the idea to life." [A picture containing text Description automatically generated]The students explored the art and history of boat lofting and painting; as well as the secrets of visual design as exemplified in the NATO phonetic alphabet. Students completed a simple drawing of a fishing boat, based on architectural renderings of the Shenandoah, then created complete watercolor and ink paintings of their fishing boat. Students also learned about the NATO alphabet, creating a set of nautical flags that spell out SHENANDOAH. The project was funded by a grant from the Pierce County Arts Commission in conjunction with the new HHM exhibit, "Treasures from the Shenandoah." This project furthered the mission of the Harbor History Museum by interpreting the art of boat building and fishing (founding endeavors of our community) in creative and engaging ways; by inviting community participation; and by capturing the imagination of young audiences through school and family programs. Founded in 1964, the Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society, dba Harbor History Museum, opened its new facility in 2010. The museum campus includes an 1893 fully restored one-room schoolhouse; a 65-foot fishing vessel currently being meticulously conserved; 7,000 square feet of exhibition space; and a 900-square foot library, research and meeting room. The Museum provides a variety of public education programs. Our core educational program is the Pioneer School Experience (PSE), which serves over 1,400 students every year. Our permanent exhibit features professionally designed exhibitions, larger-than-life experiences, and opportunities for hands-on exploration of our region's rich history and unique heritage. In addition, the Museum provides 3-5 special exhibits throughout the year so there is always something new to see and experience for our members and visitors.
