Metro Parks Tacoma planners invite citizens to review the 2008 Concept Plan for Point Defiance Park and discuss it in a series of public meetings at the Point Defiance Pagoda.
Several years ago, Metro Parks Tacoma engaged the public in discussions about the future of Point Defiance Park. Their work culminated in the Concept Plan, which captured a wealth of input about the direction the park should take.
The 2014 Capital Bond is the catalyst to advance additional improvements within the park, starting with the refinement of the Concept Plan into a formal park Master Plan by summer 2015. The Master Plan process in the first half of 2015 is meant to affirm the shared vision and direction for the park established in 2008.
The January 29 public meeting is the first of four to provide opportunities for the public to participate, learn, and give input. The meeting will be followed by breakout sessions about Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, improvements to the waterfront, and communications.
Each will begin at 6 p.m. at the Pagoda in Point Defiance Park:
January 29: Review of the 2008 Concept Plan for Point Defiance Park.
February 26: This will build on the January 29 meeting
March 26: This will build on the February 26 meeting.
April 23: A review of the semifinal master plan that will be submitted to the Board for approval in late spring.
Another meeting, on February 18, will be an open house to learn about capital projects at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. The meeting will take place at the zoo's Education Center at 6 pm. More information at http://www.metroparkstacoma.org/calendar?id=4323
To ensure that a high level of public engagement continues, the park district is providing multiple ways for citizens to give input. All may be found at DestinationPointDefiance.org, which directs to a go-to Web page for news and information about Point Defiance Park projects.
