NO STOPPING TRANE AS ISLAND PILOT LAUNCHES
Reuben Trane, birth mother to Florida Bay Coaster
and midwife to Krogen Express, is bringing
another new concept to the boating market.
It's the Island Pilot 395, a fast trawler based
on the working pilot boats of U.S. commercial
harbors. Trane, just back from the factory in
Zhuhai, China, says he sea-trialed Hull #1 two
weeks ago:
"Our expectations were exceeded by the
performance produced by the pair of 350 HP Volvo
Penta D6 diesels driving Duo Prop sterndrives! A
top end of over 33 knots! A cruise of over 28
knots burning less than 28 gallons/hour (better
than 1 nautical mile per gallon). This high-speed
performance was matched by her displacement speed
efficiency. She uses 2.9 gallons/hour at 7.8
knots giving her a range of 1,000 nautical miles
using 90% of her full load of 400 gallons of
fuel."
Here is a question-and-answer interview conducted prior to his factory visit:
Q: When will the first boat arrive in U.S.
waters? Where, exactly, and what plans are there
to show it?
A: Early June in Haddam, Connecticut. I will be
showing and sea-trialing her there (this is up
the Connecticut River from Essex).
Q: What is the base price?
A: Pre-constrution orders are priced as follows:
D3-163HP motors $339,500, D4-260HP motors
$358,000, D6-350HP motors $379,250.
Pre-construction orders will also include:
Complete second set of electronics for fly bridge
(lower station electronics are standard),
Satellite gyro-stabilized TV antenna (KVH or
equivalent) and 5HP Wesmar bow thruster.
Q: What do you consider your greatest
achievements to be in the boating industry?
A: The Peep Hen, my 14-foot camp cruiser.
Q: What caused you to develop the Island Pilot?
A: If I had $5 for every time someone stepped on
a Great Harbour N37 (my last full displacement
design) who said, "If you could make her go 15
knots, I'd buy her," I could have stopped this
foolishness and retired. Instead, I decided to
take the salient features that made the N37 the
successful trawler that she is and give her some
updated styling and speed. Add to that the
extreme value to be gained by building in China
and by making all the normal options standard,
and you have something fresh in the market.
Q: How old are you? What was your first boating experience?
A: Turned 60 in December. I started canoeing
when 8 years old on Lake Temagami in Ontario,
Canada. Went to camp at 9 (8 weeks of canoe
tripping). My dad bought a 50-foot Chris Craft
when I was 12 and that's when I started cruising.
Started my first boat company in 1979,
Florida Bay Boat Company. Of the five brands I've
brought to market in the past 25 years, four have
been in continual production and are still in
production (Florida Bay Hens, Krogen Express,
Great Harbour Trawlers and now, Island Pilot).
Only line that didn't last was the Florida Bay
Coasters, most likely my most loved product.

ACROSS THE ATLANTIC WITH 2.5 HORSEPOWER
April 30 marked the 10th anniversary of one of
the most remarkable voyages under power, the
crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a 21-foot boat
powered by a 2.5-horsepower outboard motor.
The man who accomplished the feat in 27 days was
Seiko Nakajima of Switzerland, the outboard power
was Tohatsu. And the fuel burn? 0.23 gallons per
hour, at an average speed of 3.69 knots.

NORDHAVN UNVEILS 68-FOOT PASSAGEMAKER
In introducing a new 68-foot long-range Nordhavn,
Pacific Asian Enteriprises says it's maintaining
a "focus on building brawny boats loaded with
technology, amenities and style as reflected in
its latest models. With popularity of
expedition-style trawlers at an all-time high,
the new 68 will bridge the gap between the look
and feel of the Nordhavn 62 and the flagship of
the line, the Nordhavn 76.
"There are those who have great affection for the
aft pilothouse boat and we felt that there was
room in between our 62 and 76 for such a
Nordhavn," said PAE President Dan Streech.

LOW-SPEED WORK MODE FOR NEW COMNAV AUTPILOT
Responsive rudder control is important for
workboats, sportfishers and other vessels such as
trawler yachts that often operate at low speeds.
These boats get an extra hand with the Admiral
ComPilot from ComNav Marine which features a work
mode that provides increased rudder response and
advanced steering functions.

NO TRANSAT RALLY IN 2006
Plans for an all-make rally across the Atlantic
next year to follow in the wake of the successful
Nordhavn Atlantic Rally have not materialized.
"There was interest from would-be participants
but not sufficient to operate a rally as an
independent event," said Georgs Kolesnikovs, a
member of the organizing group behind the idea
for North Atlantic Rally 2006.
The group continues to host a Web site where
those interested can indicate their interest in
trawler rallies in the future as well as
buddy-boating for long passages.
