Hello Gators,
GATORTHON IS HERE!!!...
Being around the Y, you may have noticed that there is an activity called the "Annual Campaign" taking place right now... This is the Y's annual fundraising event to support their ability to offer YMCA scholarships to individuals and families that cannot afford to purchase a membership. The Y has asked different groups that are part of the Y, like ours, if we'd be willing to support the campaign. That was the impetus for "Gatorthon"! Here is some information...
. What is Gatorthon? Some of you know that I train annually for a spring marathon and I'm again doing so this year. My training plan includes a handful of 20 mile long runs and, unfortunately, I've had to complete a few of them indoors over the past couple of years due to our poor winter weather. So I figured I'd use that experience to put one of them to good use to help raise funds for the Annual Campaign on behalf of our club by volunteering to run a 26.2 mile "treadmill marathon" and asking for donations. BUT... What makes it "Gatorthon" is that you can participate by joining 1-2 relay teams that will also run a marathon on an adjacent treadmill; your part can be as short as a mile or two. Additionally, I'd like to ask for your donations as well as your support by promoting the event to your family and friends and requesting donations on behalf of Gatorthon. Donations can be "per mile" or a set amount and would go towards our team effort ("per mile donations" will be for 26.2 miles total, not the grand total miles that the entire team runs... so a $1/mi donation would be for $26.20... assuming one of us finishes).
. When is Gatorthon? Sunday, March 1, starting around 8:15am and hopefully finishing by Noon. Note... This is the same date as the Spring-Ford Rotary Club's pancake breakfast that the Y is promoting (ends at 1pm)... The perfect place to go for a recovery meal!
. How do I sign-up?
. If you want to donate... You can either click on the "Make A Donation" button near the bottom of this message to make a one-time or recurring donation through the Y website for online donations or you can just let me know that you'd like to participate and the amount (and if it's "per mile" or a set amount). No donation amount is too small.
. NOTE: Very Important... If you use the "Make a Donation" button, please select "In Honor Of" and enter "Tri Club" so that we can track our progress!
. If you want to be part of a relay team... Just let me know that you are interested and the maximum distance you'd like to run and I'll coordinate the 1-2 relay teams (guys team and ladies team?).
. If you want to do both... Great!
. Are there any other highlights? Well, we're still thinking of ideas, so if you have any, send them in. Some possibilities...
. Runners in Gator team gear... This will be a good chance to promote our club.
. "Finish Line Photos"... Perhaps we could plan it so everyone finishes around the same time.
. Aid station... So if you don't want to run, you could "volunteer" at the "aid station"... The twist is that you will have to bring the aid to the runners vs. them running to you. Let me know if you are interested in that.
. Inflate-a-Gators: Maybe we can put some of last year's Lake Placid inflatable alligators to good use?
Let me know if you have any questions, would like to donate, would like to run (and max distance), would be willing to work the aid station, and/or have any great ideas to make this a great event!
Otherwise, watch for the follow-up e-mail with the "Donate Now" button and a flyer that you can use to promote the event.
Go Gators!
